    Company names major domain companies in basket of defendants for cybersquatting. 3M has filed a lawsuit against a who’s who of domain name whois privacy services, registrars, and web hosts, along with numerous John Does. The conglomerate alleges the defendants are using a number of domain names incorporating 3M’s trademark for gambling sites.

    A Spanish company that owns two domains seized by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has petitioned the court to release the domains. The company, Puerto 80 Projects, filed a brief in the Second District of New York which argues that its website – rojadirectica.com (also rojadirectica.org) – is an online discussion forum which “two Spanish courts specifically held that the website was operating legally and did not infringe copyrights.”

    Internet hosting outfit GoDaddy says it will start selling off domain names ending in .XXX to adults only sites because of pressure from its users. “We’ve said from the beginning, when it comes to dotXXX, we are going to listen to our customers,” GoDaddy CEO and founder Bob Parsons told thinq_. “A large number of our customers have spoken … and there is a demand for the controversial new domain name extension – for both brand protection purposes and for new names. So what are we going to do? GoDaddy is going to give our customers what they want!”

  • Growth of Top-level Domains Spells More Risk of Cyber Threats

    VeriSign warned that the expansion of new generic TLDs, approved by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, could provide an expanded target space for hackers. “As the DNS expands to make room for more TLDs, it is vital to remain vigilant against cyber threats that increasingly target the DNS,” the company said in releasing the report. “If the DNS is compromised, the entire Internet is at risk.” TLD operators must be prepared to defend against attacks with the ability to quickly detect and mitigate them in the cloud before the malicious traffics reach their networks.

    In a major win for ICM Registry, Go Daddy announced today that it will offer .xxx domain names to its customers. Offering the controversial domain name was not a forgone conclusion for the world’s biggest registrar. Go Daddy founder Bob Parsons had previously said he wasn’t sure if the company would carry the domain name and that adult registrations are only a small part of its business.

A new lawsuit filed by a company called Coventry First filed a lawsuit this week seeking to evict the anonymous twittersquatter who is critiquing the company with the @coventryfirst Twitter account, but it’s unlikely to succeed.
