    Verisign posted solid earnings on continuing growth in its user base despite the rising popularity of other top level domains. The company recently renewed its contract with ICANN to be the authoritative registry operator for .net domains for 6 more years. It also announced an anticipated price hike for .com and .net domains, which we have already factored in our model. Upside to our forecast could arise from market share gains as new rules will allow businesses to register any domain name. This could lift our forecast for total user base of .com and .net domain names that we currently expect to increase from ~120 million this year to around 350 million by the end of our forecast.

    Arbitration panel awards WeWillRockYou.com to rock band. Here’s a follow up to a story I first reported in June. The rock band Queen filed a domain name dispute over the name WeWillRockYou.com. We Will Rock You is one of Queen’s greatest hits. The song later became the name of a musical that still tours the globe to packed houses.

    French Internet authorities have been swamped by demands for domain names since a new law authorised the use of around 30,000 previously banned website addresses such as islam.fr and internet.fr. The decree authorizing the new law was published on Wednesday, and French authorities say they now have to deal with over 6,000 requests that have been made since the law was passed a month ago.

    As announced in a press release published today, Tucows (NYSE AMEX:TCX, TSX:TC) has purchased all the shares of German registrar EPAG for approximately US$2.5 Million (€1.5 Million to purchase the shares and the settlement of a working capital adjustment of €0.25 Million) through an all-cash transaction.
