    I was just reading the news and saw the PR for .CO domains. How popular and effective are they? Is this type of domain something to keep an eye on?

    I think it will be similar to all other country-code domains, such as .me or .ca, etc. There will be certain special cases, such as sex.co or similar generic, single-word, large-search-volume domains that will have more value than the remainder. However, these are a small fraction of domains and most have already been reserved.

    For the reminder of us without generic, single-word .co domains, I think it will have less value than .com, .net or .org.

    In addition, I think that unless and until the mindshare of Americans understands that whatever.co is not just a typo for whatever.com, it’s a waste of money. Yes, I agree that Overstock.com’s rebranding to O.co will help, but I don’t think the mindshare of the average American will change for years. So you could buy now and be a visionary, or buy now and waste a few hundred bucks for a few years until you let the domains expire like the thousands of other domain names that do so daily.

    There are several recently published news articles that discuss the .co and abbreviated names that you might find useful. Go to: http://doms.to/k6q to find the latest news.

    Hi Robert – I just read another article in the news: “Keynote From .Nxt Meeting: Juan Calle “.Com is Really a Typo of .Co”” posted on February 10, 2011 that you might find interesting.

    @Robert,

    In my opinion, .co extension is good if you applied to reserve good generic names, and also acquired .co in the land rush. You can still register good .co domains, but reselling them will take some time. I prefer the sure sale (.com).

    .co domains are rather new. Industry sales, the final results of the Sedo auction, and develop sites will determine the future of the extension. I only own 6 .co domain names. In my opinion, I’m keeping a distance from the extension because I can’t rely on a long-term investment. Domaining is about the quick flips. Thanks.

    I’d buy a .co only if it were a really good single-word generic. Otherwise, I’m sticking to .com.

    Recently yahoo/bing started showing .co on page one serps.

    So we trashed .co until we saw yahoo/bing push them to page one.

    Just look up ‘page 1 bing’ on yahoo and bing, what do you see. .co and .mobi on page one done by PAGE ONE

    So now .co may be a G tld, if SE’s decide to rank it as a G tld over being a CC tld.

    I currently own the following generic domains with the .co extension: Adirondack.co, AminoAcids.co, Damask.co, and Filigree.co. As far as I’m concerned, the value of a generic domain is based on the brand-ability or prominence of it’s extension. “.Com” is a household name, there is no confusion in a .com name because people trust and associate it with Commercial. The same can be said for .net and more importantly .org which most people associate as trustworthy when it comes to advice on topics such as Health.

    .Co has some potential, however, it is contingent upon as long as the registrars continue promoting the extension as a GTLD and so long as it’s founders improve their already effective marketing strategy.

    I’ve seen a few doing well in the SERPS, Google does allow you to use them as you would a GTLD. I imagine more are not seen on the front page because most people are squatting and have the domains parked and the other half are not properly developing their domains for their desired keywords or they are targeting highly competitive keywords with weak content.

    It’s all about what business your in. If you’re looking to flip undeveloped domains then .co is probably not a wise investment. If you’re looking to build a new business on .co, you are still taking an enormous risk considering that many of your customers are likely to type .com but it’s something to consider If you can’t find a good name elsewhere.
